Taking Notes From Simran Kaur’s Girls That Invest Empire

Let’s be real: the finance industry has long been a boys’ club. In a world typically dominated by men, women haven’t had as many opportunities to learn how to grow their income, explore investments, and find financial freedom – until now. On #FinTok (Financial TikTok), women are sharing with other women the things no one taught them. And not only are these FinTok creators educating their audiences on how to build wealth, they’re also reaping the rewards as pioneers online.

Simran Kaur is that girl. She’s a podcast host (Girls That Invest), author, course creator, and has recently landed a spot on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list. Her journey is a source of inspiration for us all – not only because she’s breaking barriers and empowering women with financial education, but also because she’s built a 7-figure business doing it. We caught up with the content creator-turned-media company owner to talk about building her brand, monetization, and what’s next for her growing empire.

Little Extras

💸 The challenge worth paying attention to right now: The TikTok Creative Challenge. Creators can now submit video ads and be rewarded based on performance. Who doesn’t love a good ROI?

🎥 For the people, by the people. YouTube’s new 2023 Culture & Trends Report highlights how creators are shaping culture by driving trends like superfandom and generative AI tools.

🤖 Worried AI is coming for your job? Creators aren’t. In fact, many see this new technology as a collaborative tool to help imagine new possibilities while boosting productivity.

💰 Twitter is working hard to compete with other platforms. Its ad revenue-sharing program is launching soon, which will enable users to monetize from ads displayed in replies.

👑  Creators, your 15 minutes of fame have arrived. As digital media becomes a serious form of entertainment, online creators are being crowned as the celebrities of our time.

⚠️ People are over being real, which is why TikTok Now (TikTok’s BeReal copycat feature) is getting nixed. One would hope this means apps are finally going to stay in their own lane.

🔑  Instagram’s tips for improving reach may seem obvious (create engaging content and post original content), but advice like keeping Reels to 90 seconds and collaborating with other creators are useful takeaways.

🐝  Collaborating with content creators is all the buzz, especially at BuzzFeed. In an effort to keep costs down while expanding reach, the company is getting serious about working with external creators.

Decoding the YouTube Shorts Algorithm

YouTube Shorts is all the rage right now, but a lot of creators are still in the dark about how to maximize its potential for channel growth. Even though YouTube has been tight-lipped on how it all works, there are insights we can consider when it comes to embracing the algorithm as an effective and intuitive tool.

For instance, most creators are making 30-40 second videos, but strategists have noted that 50-60 second videos perform much better. The algorithm also favors videos with a higher “viewed” percentage over the ones where users quickly swiped away. Plus, the fastest growing channels are the ones that use Shorts to build awareness around other content.

Curious to dive in deeper? We answer some of the burning questions about YouTube Shorts and explain how to create content that vibes with the algorithm.

TL;DR

💯 Giving credit where credit is due: Simran Kaur built a 7-figure business with just one digital product. Talk about major creator goals.👏  Also: BuzzFeed’s strategy of working with content creators is really paying off. And it’s official: creators are in their celebrity era. 💐

🤖 Creators aren’t nervous about AI stealing their jobs, ⚠️ TikTok is removing its BeReal copycat feature (did anyone even use it?), and Twitter is launching its ad revenue-sharing program 💸. As they say, the only constant is change, and that rings especially true in the digital world.
